Today was hot.
More humid than hot, probably, today was a day full of outreach and fun (sometimes even simultaneously). The morning started out with breakfast, followed by a teaching time led by the supreme, magnificent, and humble-to-the-core leader Tristan, who is great. The students learned about the importance of loving others and got to discuss who in their lives they needed to show love to.
After this teaching time, StreetWise had morning worship with a short devotional. The group then divided into two and went to different locations to learn about reaching Muslims and LGBTQ community members (these were two separate training sessions). This prepared students for afternoon ministry opportunities, where the two groups were able to go to different locations.
The one group who heard about Muslims got to go to Reading Terminal Market. The other who learned about reaching LGBTQ people went to a neighborhood in town called the Gayborhood – this is what the community legitimately calls themselves and is not a crass term dubbed by outsiders. Many students were able to initiate some very interesting conversations and learned a lot about interacting with different people.
Returning to the church, students debriefed about their experiences and then ate dinner. There was about an hour of free time before the next session, which was a foreign concept for our OB students. After the naps that ensued, another session took place on the importance of considering God’s calling into inner city ministry.
To finish out the night, the team headed out and got to see some of Philly. The team visited the site of the Liberty Bell and then the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Some ran the iconic Rocky Steps, and afterwards, the team spent some time sitting in a location overlooking the Schuylkill river. During this time, individuals shared about what God has taught them on Operation Barnabas, and we discussed what it meant to finish out strong as we near the end of tour. We ended with prayer over the city, and then we headed back to Urban Hope.
As we enter our last few days, pray that we can finish out strong. Pray that the team will strive to make these last few days matter with each other and with their ministry to others. Thank you so much for your support these past few weeks. We are confident that the good things we have seen happen have had a lot to do with the prayer you have given for us. We’re excited to see what’s going to happen the next few days. Remember us in your prayers as we endeavor to finish well.
